In Memoriam: Arnold P. Gold, MD

Columbia University Irving Medical Center celebrates the life and mourns the passing of Arnold Gold, MD, longtime faculty member and generous friend. Dr. Gold was a beloved and pioneering pediatric neurologist, widely respected both for his medical expertise and his profound compassion for children as well as their families. Dr. Gold's legacy is perhaps most clearly embodied by the Gold Foundation, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Dr. Gold and his wife, Sandra Gold, founded the Arnold P. Gold Foundation to support the training and practice of medicine with an emphasis on humanism. In 1993, the Gold Foundation and Columbia held the first-ever "white coat ceremony," the now nearly ubiquitous annual celebration of the entry of students into the medical profession at essentially very U.S. and many global medical schools. He will be remembered as a valued colleague, a trusted mentor, a devoted physician, and an icon of humanism. We offer our condolences to the extended Gold family.
